Club Info

Welcome to Urban Swaras running club. We are based in Nairobi, and started running as a group in 2006 before getting formally registered in 2010. We organize weekly Saturday runs mostly in and around Nairobi, as well as out of town runs at scenic locations all over our beautiful country. Our goal is to promote recreational running in Kenya, and provide a home for runners of all caliber looking for good running company and a variety of interesting running trails.

Our Running Club caters to all runners from beginners wishing to get fit through running, to semi-elite runners looking to improve their running times. Members are encouraged to participate in races in the regions, with the Club regularly entering teams in some of the running events in the region, for example Lewa Marathon, Nairobi Marathon, Mwea Classic Marathon, Naivasha Relay and Kilimanjaro Marathon, among others. Some members have gone on to participate in International events like Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, Victoria Falls Marathon, Kampala Marathon, Kigali Marathon, Chicago Marathon, New York Marathon, Paris Marathon, Florence Marathon, Leadville 100 among others.

Having several members who’ve completed several Marathon races has enabled us provide Pacers to lead pace groups in local running events. Years of experience have ensured our Pacers can understand the feeling first time runners go through when the going gets tough, and the thrill of achieving their dream by crossing the line, or improving their time.

The Club also engages in charitable events, one per year and has sponsored a kidney transplant, heart surgery, bought walking and sitting aids for disabled children, sponsored schooling of a girl rescued from early marriage, donated clothes, food and shoes to a children’s home and to a Sports Club of upcoming elite runners.

The Club is governed by a constitution, and managed by Officials elected during an AGM held every two years. The Club Officials include a Chairperson, Treasurer, Coordinator, Patron, and members of the  Calendar, Routes and Events (CRE) Committee. The CRE committee sets the Club’s Running Calendar on a biannual basis with upcoming races in mind when determining distances of each weekly run, and is assisted by volunteers from among the members in scouting for interesting running locations. Routes are then marked by the Trail Fox (the Club’s nickname for the individual hired to assist with this task).

Urban Swaras members and guests can enjoy the following activities with the club:

1. Organized weekly runs (every Saturday morning)

2. Interesting out of town runs (Monthly)

3. Participation in team running events

4. Support (fruits and drinks) while participating in local races

5. Serving as Pacers in local races

6. Social Events to celebrate end of successful running seasons

Some of the past out of town runs and events the clubs has organized or participated in include:

Iten High Altitute Training Camp

Mt Longonot Run

Mt Kenya Run

Shompole Marathon

Graceland Marathon

Camp Malta

Kerio Valley (Fluorspar)

Hi, I am trying to figure out the best dates during Mary or June to book my trip to visit my daughter who lives in Nairobi. It would certainly be a bonus if there was an event on within that time I could work around. There is nothing I can see on the urban swaras calender, but please let me know if there is anything scheduled which perhaps has not made it to the calender yet. Which area of Nairobi are the weekly runs held in, and what distance are they? I am not a fast runner. I am looking at anything in the 5 -to say 15km range.
    Kind regards, Jennie

    Good afternoon,
My name is Abbey and I work with Vision 21 Sports Consulting.
We are currently working on conducting a Health Month for one of our big corporate clients and one of the major activities involved are running. We are aiming to have 20 participants and we wanted to find out if Urban Swaras would be able to accommodate a group of this size for a 5-6KM run? This would be in November, the date is to be confirmed.
Kindly let me know if this is possible, you may reach me on 0716-000731 if you’d like to discuss further.
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you.
    Kind regards,
